Horror was never my love until The Waking Dead TV series brought me to ZOMBIES. My take on the genre is that zombies represent the government. Mindless bureaucrats that infect everything they touch, getting their teeth into people and turning them brain dead too. Slowly more of the world become infested with unproductive activity until those few remaining need to flee for their very existence.
As the TV series progress I’ve noticed a disturbing change to the plots. Initially the uninfected fight against the undead, dispatching them and trying to keep the world safe. After a time, the plots degenerate into bouts of self loathing and a desire to save everyone, even those that can’t be saved. The parallels with government and real people high. Time after time, trying to help others result in the destruction of any real progress at maintaining a good place to live and prosper. This is so bad at times that I’ve had to stop watching a few days or weeks. How can people be so stupid!
I know it’s only a TV series and only one writer’s ideas, but it really makes me mad and has me saying, “Kill the zombies and kill the zombie lovers.” It doesn’t work. The shows keep on letting the zombies rule.
After one particularly bad episode of Fear The Walking Dead I’d had enough. I can write better I said. Well maybe I can’t, but at least in my story zombies and their followers will die. So that’s another task to finish. A third the way through (Oct 2020) I’m writing my version of a zombie invasion. For once, this won’t have a great happy ending, but at least plenty of zombies and those helping them will die. Haven’t a title yet but hope to have it finished by Christmas.
